May 24 - I John 1:5-10
We confess in our prayer of approach first that we are sinners, that we are at the Lord’s Table through no merit of our own. But we rejoice in turn again for the forgiveness we have in Christ, trusting in His promise that as we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive them. We pray as well that He might cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
May 25 - John 1:29-31
As we draw nearer still to God, we confess that Jesus Christ is the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. We beseech the Master of the feast to forgive us, and to welcome us, praying in confidence because of His death for us.
May 26 - Ephesians 5:17-21
Though we approach the kneeling benches a row at a time, we are all truly coming together. And as we come, we come encouraging one another with hymns, Psalms and spiritual songs. We feast together even as we sing together.
May 27 - Matthew 4:1-4
We pray after the supper, that we would not forget, but that we would be changed. We have feasted upon the Word, for Jesus is the Word made flesh. We thank the Master of the feast, and beseech Him to strengthen us throughout the week.
May 28 - Psalm 40:1-4
At the table, through His death and resurrection, we are lifted up out of a miry pit. We are rescued from His Wrath, and are established on solid ground. Is it any wonder that He should give us a new song? Here we respond to His grace by rejoicing in that grace in song.
May 29 - Numbers 6:24-26
The “Good Words” of the benediction are not more praise of God from us, but God’s pronouncement of blessing upon us. We receive the blessing from God, having been welcomed and fed at His table. We hold our hands open, to joyfully receive the blessing our Lord has earned for us.
May 30 - Matthew 17:1-4
Having feasted at the table of our Lord, having tasted of His glory, it is natural that we should desire to stay, to continue the feast. But our Lord gently reminds us that we have work to do. The good news is that we can return again next week to the same feast.
May 31 - Matthew 28:18-20
As we leave the sanctuary we enter into the mission field, the battle field, where we are called to make disciples of the nations. We have entered into rest, and now we return to war against the seed of the serpent. We do so, however, knowing because we have been to His table, that goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives, and that we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
